Eigerøy Lighthouse

Up to September 2018, the art exhibition "In balance with" by the Swiss artist Daniela Schönbächler is being shown at the Eigerøy Lighthouse. The exhibition consists of three installations: a mirror installation, "Eigerøy's eye" and a photo exhibit. Take a trip to the lighthouse and check it out!

Eigersund Municipality has made Eigerøy Lighthouse into a kind of coast cultural center. The municipality, in cooperation with 22 landowners, has built a 2 km long road out to the lighthouse building. A parking lot has been built with toilet facilities, and a small strait has been dredged between Midtbrødøy and Eigerøy so that pleasure boats can get out to the lighthouse inshore. The lighthouse is open for Sunday visits during the summer months.

Vannbassengan - The Pool

This is a hilly and versatile pine forest area located just northeast of downtown Egersund. Earlier, Egersund’s old waterworks was up here. Today, both the pools and the old stone-lined canals create excitement and variety in the forest environment.

The Launes Mountain

From highway Rv 44, you turn off at Eie in Egersund, towards Eigerøy, highway Rv 502. After 500 meters, you turn left. Auglend

Auglend is a rich outdoor recreation area located on the southern tip of Søre Eigerøya. In 1995 it was voted the outdoor recreation area of the year in Norway. In the past, this was a typical coastal farm where fishing and farming went hand in hand - a so-called combination farm. The cultivated areas have cozy and idyllic grassy meadows surrounded by lush deciduous forest belts. The uncultivated land stands in stark contrast with gray rocks and outcrops, which are woven together with barren heather and grassland. Naked weathered rocky beaches form the border zone towards the sea. The boathouse environment in Vandringhavn is itself the heart of the area. Auglend is a great hiking area suitable for the whole family. Good parking, nature and cultural information, toilet, marked trail, etc. Year-round requirement to use leashes for dogs. Follow highway Rv. 502, and turn left after Eigerøy bridge. Drive straight ahead to the end.

Varberg

The area has small nature trails and a road to the top which has a great view of the town, the seaward approaches and the district. At the top there are binoculars for viewing details in the terrain. At the foot of Varberg, furthest in Øvre Prestegårdsvei, you will find petroglyphs or ruins from the Early Bronze Age (ca. 1000 – 500 BC). This location consists of 2 ship figures. Signs from downtown, 15 minute hike or 5 minute drive to the parking place. Suitable for wheelchairs, but somewhat steep for manual wheelchairs.

Lindøy Battery

Is an ancient coastal fort that was built in the first part of the 16th century under King Christian IV and closed down in 1826. The fort is located on the sea approach to Egersund harbor, with views of the sound to both the south and north. A powder room and cannons have been restored at the fort. At the foot of the battery, in the sea, stands the aluminum figure "Linda" created by the artist Hanny T. Konttinen. Access from downtown towards Eigerøy, turn left before the tunnel, then turn right and then left into Åsanevegen. Drive through the factory where you will find parking places. Look for the wooden stairway which goes diagonally up from the road.

Mysinghålå

Is found at Mysingheia, Helleland, about 20 km from downtown Egersund. Fine 10 km long marked hiking trail. This is a hiking area with an exciting history. For more than a year, Mysinghålå served as a periodic hiding place for the resistance group Vestige IV from the company Linge (the "Aakre-gang") during World War II. The cave was furnished with stove, bunks, table and window. The hiding place was never found by the Germans. Further, one can go 2 km to Hestadfjellet mountain where you will find the remains of one of the towed sailplanes that crashed during Operation Freshman (the action against the heavy water plant at Rjukan) during World War II. From highway E39 follow the road toward Mysing and the marked trail from the parking place.

The old Jæren train

The old Jæren train line between Hellvik and Maurholen is converted to a hiking / cycling route. The road meanders between and through the rocky outcrops and hills, and impressive stone work was constructed for the old line. Great trip! Parking in Maurholen and at Launes.

Stapnes

This is a walking area with diverse experiences in a distinctive rocky coast with adjoining heathlands and cultivated pastures. Stapnes Fort from World War II is located in the area and consists of bunkers and cannon emplacements. Stapnes Fort was one of the first coastal forts that the Germans built in Norway and was one of the few actively used in battle against the Allied forces.
