Eigerøy Lighthouse

This 2,3 kilometer long trip starts from the parking place at Eigerøy lighthouse and stretches over beautiful coastal landscape. The area has a very special geology and therefore status as a geopark. Visit Magma Geopark to learn more. For romantics, this is the perfect evening trip that is rewarded with a golden sunset. If you get tired, the lighthouse keeper’s house can be rented for accommodation, with sunrise included.

How to get here: from centre, follow 44 towards Stavanger and then 42 towards Eigerøy. Over the bridge, turn right and follow the signs all the way to Eigerøy fyr.

Vannbassengan

This is a hilly and versatile pine forest area located just northeast of centre. Earlier, Egersund’s old waterworks were up here. Today, both the pools and the old stone-lined canals create excitement and variety in the forest environment. With its location, nature and easy-to-use facilities, this is today one of the most popular outdoor activities areas in Dalane. The area has a rich vegetation and several kilometers of nature and culture trails. Here you will find lighted trails, viewpoints and picnic areas with good opportunities for activities such as jogging, exercising, ball games, sand volleyball, barbecues and swimming. In addition, you’ll find a natural fitness course at Låvaberget.

How to get here: From the centre, drive a few hundred meters in the direction of Sokndal. Follow the sign to Vannbassengan that leads you up to a large parking area. The area is well-suited for wheelchair users. Handicap accessible parking. Year-round leash requirement for dogs.

Trollpikken

Trollpikken became world famous in 2017 when someone decided to cut it down from the mountain where it had been hiding for almost 10,000 years. The landscape where Trollpikken is located is mainly a cultural landscape formed by traditional cultivation and animal breeding. You can see old land borders, fences and lakes along the trail, and if you choose to walk from Trollpikken and down to the centre of Egersund, you will get a unique insight into how animals and agriculture have shaped the landscape. Family-friendly trip.

We suggest two ways to get to Trollpikken:

1: Follow highway Fv 42 from Egersund train station towards Krossmoen. After about 2 minutes, turn right onto Sletteidveien, signposted Trollpikken. Drive to the parking lot marked Trollpikken, about 3-4 minutes. Follow the marked trail, 1.9 km one way.

2: It is also possible to follow the marked path to Trollpikken from Vannbassengan. Follow the signs to Trollpikken (along the «Opplev Dalane» trail, around 6km).

Launes top

Enjoyable hike over varied landscape with a rewarding view. Partly gravel road, following a forest path up to the top of Launes. Length of hike: 3.9 km, round trip.

How to get here: from highway Rv 44, take off at Eie in Egersund, towards Eigerøy, highway Rv 502. After 500 meters, turn left. Follow the signs towards parking for Den gamle Jærbanen.

Auglend

Auglend is a rich outdoor recreation area located on the southern tip of Søre Eigerøya. In 1995 it was voted the outdoor recreation area of the year in Norway. In the past, this was a typical coastal farm where fishing and farming went hand in hand – a so-called combination farm. The cultivated areas have cozy and idyllic grassy meadows surrounded by lush deciduous forest belts. The uncultivated land stands in stark contrast with gray rocks and outcrops, which are woven together with barren heather and grassland. Naked weathered rocky beaches form the border zone towards the sea. The boathouse environment in Vandringhavn is itself the heart of the area. Auglend is a great hiking area suitable for the whole family. Good parking, nature and cultural information, toilet, marked trail, etc. Year-round requirement to use leashes for dogs. Follow highway Rv. 502, and turn left after Eigerøy bridge. Drive straight ahead to the end.

Varberg

The area has narrow nature trails and a path to the top which offers magnificent view over the town, the harbour and the district. You can find binoculars at the top. At the foot of Varberg, furthest in Øvre Prestegårdsvei, you will find petroglyphs from the Early Bronze Age (ca. 1000 – 500 BC). This location consists of 2 ship figures.

How to get here: follow the signs from the centre, 15 minute walk or 5 minute drive to the parking place. Suitable for wheelchairs, but is rather steep.

Lindøy Battery

Lindøy is an ancient coastal fort that was built in the first part of the 16th century under King Christian IV and closed down in 1826. The fort is located on the peninsula of Lindøy, with views over the sound to both the south. Nearby, you can also see the aluminum sculpture of “Linda”, which greats the incoming boats (created by the artist Hanny T. Konttinen).

How to get here: from the centre drive towards Eigerøy, turn left before the tunnel, then turn right and then left into Åsanevegen. Drive through the factory where you will find parking places. Look for the wooden stairway which goes diagonally up from the road.

Mysinghålå

Is found at Mysingheia, Helleland, about 20 km from centre of Egersund. Fine 10 km long marked hiking trail. This is a hiking area with an exciting history. For more than a year, Mysinghålå served as a periodic hiding place for the resistance group Vestige IV from the company Linge (the “Aakre-gang”) during World War II. The cave was furnished with stove, bunks, table and window. The hiding place was never found by the Germans. Further, one can go 2 km to Hestadfjellet mountain where you will find the remains of one of the towed sailplanes that crashed during Operation Freshman (the action against the heavy water plant at Rjukan) during World War II. How to get here: from highway E39 follow the road toward Mysing and the marked trail from the parking place.

The old Jæren line

The old Jæren line between Hellvik and Maurholen is now a hiking and cycling route beloved by locals. The road meanders between and through the rocky outcrops and hills. One can admire an impressive stone work that had been constructed for the old line. Great trip!

How to get here: From the train station, follow the road to Eigerøy and the sign to Gamle Jærbanen. Parking place with information boards.

Stapnes

This is a walking area with diverse experiences in a distinctive rocky coast with adjoining heathlands and cultivated pastures. Stapnes Fort from World War II is located in the area and consists of bunkers and cannon emplacements. Stapnes Fort was one of the first coastal forts that the Germans built in Norway and was one of the few actively used in battle against the Allied forces.

How to get here: from Egersund, follow 44 towards Sokndal. There is a narrow road just before the big parking place with information. Follow the road until a small parking place with an information board. Dogs have to be on leash.
