There are many great checkpoints and picnic areas along the way. If it's too long to ride back and forth, a nice alternative is to turn around by Maurholen (an old train station with waffle sales in the summer and a beautiful outdoor area) or take the train one way. The route is part of the North-Sea road and is well marked.
Follow Fv. 44 from the center to the station, then take left and follow Fv. 502 in the direction of Eigerøy. Here you can use the cycling path and join the street up the hill all the way until the cross with the Gamle Eigerøyveien. The main cycling trail starts right after you pass under the Eigerøyveien. Cyclists are expected to respect hikers that often enjoy this trail as well.
Cycling along the Nordsjøveien from Egersund to Hellvik is a wonderful trip, which spans 12 kilometers on a well-prepared hiking / gravel road.
2. Center - Tengs / Kosen - Vingård - Langevann - Sentrum
This nice round trip is suitable for families and there are cycling trails most of the places.
From the center follow Fv. 44 to Tengs. Here you can stop for a round of mini golf or an ice cream at Kosen. At the intersection of Jærveien and Tengsareidveien, turn to the right and then follow the first exit on the right onto Vingårdsveien. At the top of Vingårdsveien, there is a nice gravel road crossing to Langevann residential area. It is possible to take a swim at the end of Store Langevann. From there down to the center you will find a superb walking and cycling path.
The round trip is less than 10 km.
3. Center - Mjølhus - Kjervall
This is a great walking and cycling path from the center, via RV 42 to the exit towards Mjølhus. The trip goes further into Sletteidveien to the end of the gravel road going up to Kjervall.
The road has low traffic and is therefore suitable for families. In the middle of the hill against Kjervall, on the right side of the gravel road, there is a great spot to jump into the water on a hot summer day.
Further on, the gravel road takes us up the tractor road to Kjervall. There are several nice places to take a break up here and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
The round trip is about 17 km.
4. Center - Hestnes
This trip takes you to the beautiful Hestnes where open sea views and beautiful hiking trails can be used as an extention of a cycling trip. The stretch goes on a sidewalk along Fv 44 towards Sokndal. You then enter the Gamle Sokndalsveien where you will have a partly mixed traffic for a while. By Lygre, you will join the walking and cycling path that runs almost completely to the parking lot right by the sea. Here you will find some great hiking areas that are well marked. You might want to walk a bit up the hill and have a rest while enjoying the view before you take the same route back.
The trip both ways is around 8 km.
5. Center - Koldalsbakken - Puntervoll - Nodland i heia - Veshovda - Center
One of the first sections of the trip is rather steep and in total the elevation is 700 m. The route is mainly covered in asphalt, but includes a minor section of gravel road. The main road has little traffic and even though this is not technically a cycling path, the route is considered to be overall safe to cycle.
From Egersund city center cycle towards Sokndal (Fv. 44). At the crossing to Koldal, turn left and follow the signs on the paved road towards Puntervold and Koldal. At the crossing at Hegdal turn left towards Vindbirkeland. Then follow the paved road straight until you join the gravel road at the end of Nodlandsvatnet. The gravel road is about 0.5 km before it turns into a paved road, down to the center again. Along the way from Nodland towards Veshovda, you will pass a hiking area Horve, wich is perfect to take a break. From Horve you go back via Veshovda and then down Koldalsbakken back to the city center.
This roundtrip is 35km long and a bit more challenging.
6. Center - Skadberg
The goal of this trip is definetely worth the effort. Skadbergsand is one of the best places in Egersund to enjoy swimming. Little can be better than a fresh breeze by the sea on a nice summer day. Your body will be extra grateful to have a refreshing swim in the sea after 15 km of cycling. The route goes mainly along paved roads with several stretches of cycling path.
Follow Fv 44 from the city center and towards train station in Egersund. Turn left by the station and follow Fv 502 towards Eigerøy*. After crossing the bridge, follow the signs to Skadbergsand up until the sea appears on the left side of the road and turn left to the parking place. The bicycle stand is by the main entrance to the beach.
